2023 Board of Ed Election Planning

Who’s running next year?

Nov 17, 2022

Congratulations to all of the 2022 New Jersey Project endorsed candidates!

We pulled off a 65% win rate and won over 135 seats across the state.

But we can’t stop now because odds are your District will need another year or two to really see a change in the Board.

Most Districts have 7 or 9 members and a majority vote is required to get anything done. Instead of scrambling to find candidates in July or worse- having to promote a write-in campaign, START PLANNING NOW!!

1) Look at your Board roster and see who is up for election in 2023

2) Find out that person’s voting history on your Board and if they plan to run again

3) If you are pleased with their record and they are running again- great! Your work is done. You’ll support their re-election next year!

4) If not, it’s time to start identifying candidates.

Some things to keep in mind if you’re considering a run:

  • You must have lived in your town for over a year
  • You must be a US Citizen and registered to vote before filing
  • Read all the requirements here
  • Each county has a unique petition that is used for school board candidates to file so reach out to your county clerk to see the actual form

The deadline to file is usually the last week of July so there is plenty of time to think about it.

Why start planning now then? There could be an unexpected resignation from your Board. People move, and people decide they don’t want to serve anymore for any number of reasons.

You want to be ready to apply for a vacancy in your District. Usually, all that is required is a short interview process and then the Board appoints a new member by voting. Trust us, this is MUCH easier than running on the ballot.

Keep the momentum going into 2023 and start identifying Board candidates TODAY!
